Firm vs Memory Foam vs Hybrid: Which Mattress Is Right for You?
Share
When you start shopping for a new mattress, you'll quickly run into three main types: firm, memory foam, and hybrid. They feel completely different to sleep on, and the right choice depends on your body, your sleep position, and what you want out of a bed. At Sleepera Mattress Wholesale, we help shoppers across Surrey, Langley, Delta, Vancouver and the rest of the Lower Mainland find the right fit every day. Here's a simple breakdown of all three.
Firm Mattresses
A firm mattress is built around a high-density core and a firm support base. That solid foundation is what gives the mattress its stability and even, supportive feel. There's very little sink — you rest on top of the mattress rather than down into it.
Firm mattresses are a great match for back sleepers and stomach sleepers, because they keep your spine properly aligned and stop your hips from sagging through the night. Many people who want strong, no-nonsense support also simply prefer the firmer feel. Browse our firm mattresses, including the X-Firm and Core Support.
Memory Foam Mattresses
Memory foam is a special foam that takes the shape of your body. Originally developed by NASA in the 1960s, it's a viscoelastic material that softens under your body heat and weight, molds around you, and then slowly springs back to its original shape once you get up. If you press your hand into it, you'll see the imprint stay for a few seconds before it recovers — that's the "memory" in memory foam.
Because it contours so closely, memory foam is excellent at pressure relief. It cradles the heavier parts of your body — shoulders, hips, knees — and spreads your weight evenly, which helps keep your spine aligned and eases pressure points. It's also one of the best materials for motion isolation: when your partner moves or gets out of bed, you feel very little of it on your side.
The main trade-off is temperature. Traditional memory foam can sleep a little warm because it hugs the body so closely, which is why modern versions often use gel-infused foam to help you stay cool. Our Pure Foam mattress pairs a firm support base with a gel memory foam top for exactly this reason. See all of our memory foam mattresses.
Hybrid Mattresses
A hybrid mattress is a combination of foam plus pocket coils — it brings together the best of both worlds. You get the pressure-relieving comfort of foam on top, sitting over a layer of supportive steel coils underneath. The result is a mattress that feels cushioned and contouring but still supportive, breathable, and responsive.
Because the coils allow air to flow through the mattress, hybrids also tend to sleep cooler than all-foam beds, while the foam layers still deliver that comfortable, body-hugging feel. Explore our hybrid mattresses, including the Grand Lux, Imperial, and Serene.
Why We Recommend Hybrid at Sleepera
Out of all three types, hybrid mattresses are the ones we recommend most — and that's based on real results and our customers' reviews. Here's why:
- They last longer. The combination of a coil support system and quality foam holds up better over the years than foam alone. Our clients' feedback backs this up time and again.
- Individually wrapped pocket coils. We use individually wrapped pocket coils, which means each coil moves on its own. This gives you near-zero motion transfer — so when your partner shifts or gets up during the night, you stay undisturbed and sleep through it.
- The best of both feels. You get the comfort and pressure relief of foam together with the support, durability, and cooling airflow of coils.
