How Often Should You Replace Your Mattress?

Your mattress works hard — you spend about a third of your life on it. But no mattress lasts forever, and sleeping on a worn-out one can quietly rob you of good rest and leave you waking up sore. So how do you know when it's time for a new one? Here's a simple guide from the team at Sleepera Mattress Wholesale in Surrey.

The General Rule: 7 to 10 Years

As a rule of thumb, most mattresses should be replaced every 7 to 10 years. That's not a hard expiry date — it depends on the type of mattress, its quality, and how well it's been cared for — but once you pass the 7-year mark, it's worth paying attention to how your mattress feels and how well you're sleeping.

How Long Each Type Lasts

  • Memory foam: around 7–10 years. Quality foam holds up well, but cheaper foam can start to sag sooner.
  • Hybrid (foam + pocket coils): around 8–10 years. The mix of quality foam and individually wrapped coils tends to last longer — one of the reasons we recommend hybrids at Sleepera.
  • Innerspring: around 6–8 years. Older-style coil mattresses often sag and wear out faster.
  • Latex: can last the longest, sometimes well past 10 years.

7 Signs It's Time to Replace Your Mattress

  1. It sags or has body impressions. Visible dips or a “valley” where you sleep mean the support layers have broken down.
  2. You wake up sore or stiff. Aches in your back, neck, or hips that ease as the day goes on are a classic sign your mattress isn't supporting you anymore.
  3. You sleep better somewhere else. If a hotel bed or your guest room feels noticeably better than your own bed, that's a strong clue.
  4. It's lumpy, noisy, or you can feel the springs. Lumps, squeaks, or poking coils all point to a worn-out mattress.
  5. Your allergies feel worse at night. Over the years, mattresses collect dust mites and allergens that can trigger sneezing and congestion while you sleep.
  6. You toss and turn. If you can't get comfortable and you're constantly shifting position, the comfort layers are likely worn out.
  7. It's simply old. If your mattress is 7–10+ years old, even if it looks fine, the materials inside have probably lost their support.

Why a Worn-Out Mattress Matters

An old, sagging mattress doesn't just feel uncomfortable — it can throw your spine out of alignment, create pressure points, and break up the deep sleep your body needs to recover. Many people live with poor sleep for years without realizing their mattress is the cause. If you're regularly waking up tired or sore, a new mattress is often the simplest fix.

How to Make Your Mattress Last Longer

  • Use a mattress protector to guard against spills, sweat, dust mites, and stains. Our Sleepera Mattress Protector is waterproof, breathable, and noiseless.
  • Rotate it head-to-foot every few months to even out the wear.
  • Give it proper support — a solid, sturdy base or foundation keeps a mattress from sagging early.
  • Keep it clean and let it air out from time to time.
